Boating - Canadian Power & Sail Squadrons' premiere course for the recreational boater. Whether you are interested in power, sail, kayak or canoe, this course is a must. It contains detailed boating-safety information, introduces the skills needed for successful plotting and navigation and explores a broad variety of related boating topics. Successful completion of the course will provide you with the first year of Regular CPS Membership and its associated benefits. After completing the first 15 sections of the course manual, and upon successful completion of an accredited examination, you will receive your Pleasure Craft Operator's Card (PCOC) at no additional charge. The course kit includes Student Notes; Homework Folder; one Training Chart "A"; Chart No. 1; Collision Regulations; Government Publications; and CPS Course Plotter.

Piloting Prerequisite: Boating Course The principal sources of compass deviation and methods for removing gross deviation and swinging the compass are discussed. Additional material on aids to navigation, anchoring, storm tactics, emergencies, etc. allows the student to build on skills learned in the Boating course. Running fixes are introduced, as well as navigating in a current. Hull designs, including propellers, rudders and hull shape are discussed as well as questions of manners and customs, including flag etiquette.

Advanced Piloting Prerequisite: Piloting A review and expansion of the topics covered in the Piloting Course. Sources and manifestations of several different types of compass deviation are introduced, together with methods for dealing with these. Advanced coastal piloting techniques such as danger bearings, using the sextant to measure vertical and horizontal angles, take fixes and running fixes as well as currents and tides are discussed in detail.

Celestial Navigation Prerequisite: Advanced Piloting Learn to set a course and determine a position at sea using the sciences of cartography and astronomy. The student must own or have access to a sextant, Bowditch, and a scientific calculator with trigonometric functions. Current year nautical almanac and USPS Star Finder are included in the course fee.

Depth Sounders  This seminar explains the principles, installation, operation and uses of the depth sounder and transducer.
Short course. Approx. 4 hrs.
Extended Cruising This fascinating course focuses on the unique aspects and challenges of sailing offshore. The course content includes passage planning, voyaging, oceanography, weather, checklists, repair kits, maritime mobile nets, and is intended to maximize the enjoyment and minimize the risks for those on board the boat. The course kit includes Student Notes and Homework Folder.

Flare Demonstration Members of Canadian Coast Guard Office of Boating Safety will discuss and demonstrate distress pyrotechnics and safety and small boat regulations generally.  All participants will be able to observe the launching, and several will have the opportunity to personally launch, flares of types "A", "B" and "C".  White flares will be used for demonstration purposes, rather than red (distress) flares.  Except for colour, these flares are identical to distress flares.  (Type "D", smoke, are not available in a non-distress colour). Note: The Coast Guard cannot accept expired flares for demonstration purposes or disposal. All expired flares should be taken to any RCMP detachment for disposal. Please do not bring them to the flare demonstration.

Global Weather This course is designed for those who wish to make ocean crossings or for the student who would just like to gain a more in-depth knowledge of meteorology. A familiarity with the basic principles of weather is assumed. For those who do not possess this knowledge, we recommend the CPS introductory weather course, "Fundamentals of Weather".  Included topics are Equilibrium in the Atmosphere, General Circulation, Air Masses, Cyclones, Forecasting, and Interpreting the professional weather map.

Navigating with GPS The objective of this course is to enable the operator of a recreational small craft to navigate safely and efficiently using a GPS receiver in conjunction with conventional charts. The course covers how to setup a GPS (including alarms), general navigation, limits of accuracy and navigating with waypoints and routes.
Electronic Chartplotting Upgrade your skills from paper to pixels! This course covers the challenge of navigating using electronic charts and the associated chart plotting hardware (including using a laptop as the plotter). It also teaches you what to look for when shopping for an electronic chart plotter and how/where to install it on your boat.
Marine Maintenance This course covers the general maintenance of motor and sailboats including the hull, electrical system, gasoline and diesel engines. Outboard motors, seasonal maintenance, safety equipment, trailers and other related subjects will also be covered.

RADAR for Pleasurecraft This course provides instruction in the use of RADAR equipment including use of the controls, interpretting the screen, plotting, navigating, collision avoidance and weather monitoring. It also includes instruction on installation and maintenance.
This course comes with an extensive list of Simulation Tutorials on CD.
Seamanship Power This course expands upon the Boating Course to provide the knowledge necessary to become a safe and proficient operator of a power-driven vessel. Course content includes: Power trains, engine controls and instruments; handling and cruising under power; mooring and anchoring; legal responsibilities; engine and trouble diagnosis; fuels and fuel systems; electrical systems; cooling and lubrication; maintenance and fire safety. Course kit includes Student Notes, Homework Folder, Training Chart "A", and Collision Regulations.
Full course. Approx. 14 wks.
Seamanship Sail Spars and rigging; sails and theory of sail action; sailboat handling; piloting and cruising under sail (day sailors and keelboats). Fire safety and sailboat racing are included as additional information.

Marine Radio (previously VHF) Learn correct radiotelephone operating procedures as well as the phonetic alphabet. This short course prepares you for the Industry Canada Restricted Radiotelephone Operator's Certificate Exam which will be given at the conclusion of the teaching sessions. A Restricted Radiotelephone Operator's Certificate is required to legally operate a marine VHF station. Beginning in December 2004, courses will include instruction on DSC (Digital Selective Calling) and GMDSS (Global Marine Distress and Safety System), and the restricted licence obtained at the end of the course will be DSC endorsed
